Diamonds in hurry to make up ground; speedway.

THERE'S a local derby at Byker tomorrow (6.30pm) when Newcastle Sapphire Engineering Diamonds take on Redcar Bears in a Premier League match.

Assuming teenage star Robert Lambert comes through tonight's appearance for Team GB in the World Cup final unscathed, it will be a full-strength Newcastle line-up that tackles a rejuvenated Redcar side that vacated bottom spot in the league table after toppling leaders Glasgow Tigers on Thursday.

Of the 13 teams in the PL, the Diamonds have raced the fewest fixtures - just nine to date.

With a mid-September cut-off date for establishing play-off positions on the horizon, the Diamonds must get three points for a win tomorrow, as team boss George English readily acknowledged.

He said: "There's a bit of a gap opening up between the top six teams and the rest, and, due to many rain-offs, we're among 'the rest' right now.

"However, we've got a busy August coming up with eight PL fixtures and we are looking to get a good haul of points from them, so hopefully we can start a winning run by seeing off the Bears tomorrow."

The Diamonds start their 'Kids Go Free' scheme tomorrow, whereby children (up to age 16) accompanied by a paying adult will be admitted free to home meetings during the school summer holidays.
