Dettori returns to action in Sicily - nex t stop The Lesters.

Byline: Bruce Jackson

FRANKIE DETTORIstarts his 2005 campaign in an unlikely setting this afternoon and is sure to be the centre of attention, writes Bruce Jackson. The champion jockey, vying for favouritism to again get the better of Kieren Fallon on the domestic front, jetted out to Italy for the new year. Today he makes a first visit to Sicily's only racecourse, Siracusa, for a meeting staged specially for the champion with race titles to match.

He has three mounts at Siracusa, which is sure to attract a bumper crowd on what is a public holiday for Epiphany in Italy.

Dettori has three good chances to make a winning start to his year before he dashes back to attend The Lesters in London's Grosvenor House on Saturday.

Ray Cochrane, his agent, did not rule out the occasional ride on the all-weather before Det-tori flies out for the nine weeks of the International Carnival in Dubai.

Today's rides are Mister Unfuwain, Calboni and Brassy Dominie, who contest the last three races on a card which finishes under lights at 7.15pm local time.

Mister Unfuwain and Calboni are both course specialists, between them boasting nine victories and four second places from the 13 races at the track.

Brassy Dominie has won six of his 40 career starts but faces 18 rivals in a seven-and-a-halffurlong handicap named in Dettori's honour as the `Premio Sette Vittorio Ad Ascot' or `The Seven Victories At Ascot Stakes'.

Sportingodds: 4-5 Fallon, 6-4 Dettori, 7 Sanders, 25 R Moore. Hills: Evs Dettori, 11-10 Fallon, 10 Sanders.

Victor Chandler: 11-10 Dettori, Fallon, 10 Sanders.
