Detroiter tip: credit checks.

As a business owner, you are entitled to use consumer reports, such as credit reports, criminal reports, motor vehicle reports and workers' compensation reports, for employment purposes. They include information that can help decide who to hire, fire, promote or reassign. If you choose to use consumer reports in your employment decisions, don't risk a lawsuit; be sure to comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Notify the individual in writing and receive their permission before obtaining a report. If the report has any influence on your decision to terminate or deny employment or a promotion, you must notify the applicant of this fact. The notice must include:

* The name, address, and phone number of the credit bureau that supplied the report.

* Statement that the credit-reporting agency is not responsible for the decision made by the employer.

* Statement of the applicant's right to obtain a copy of their credit report within 60 days, and their right to dispute information in the report.
