Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick & Police Chief Oliver Keynote April 2 American Arab Chamber Quarterly Meeting.

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Police Chief Jerry Oliver highlight the Spring Quarterly Networking Meeting of the American Arab Chamber of Commerce. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bint Jebail Cultural Center in Dearborn.

This is Kilpatrick's first official visit as mayor with the Arab American business community. He sought Arab American support and their votes during last year's mayoral campaign.

The Chamber was instrumental in establishing a dialog between the Detroit Police Department and the Arab American business community after urging by the Chamber to provide more vigilant and fair policing of Arab American businesses. The Chamber hopes that openness will continue under the current police chief.

Nasser Beydoun, executive director of the Chamber, said, "This is an honor for the Chamber to host Mayor Kilpatrick and Chief Oliver. It is an opportunity for our members to share their concerns about living and doing business in Detroit.

"We want the openness that characterized the relationship between Arab Americans and the previous Detroit administration to continue. That is especially important to our members in these current times of suspicion, secret evidence and racial and ethnic profiling."

Attendance is expected to exceed all previous membership meetings. Seating is limited. Registrations are accepted on a first come first served basis at 313-945-1700 or nbeydoun@americanarab.com . Complimentary dinner and beverages are possible through the sponsorship of Comerica, Detroit Edison, Ford Motor Company and Oakwood Healthcare System.

Bint Jebail Cultural Center is located at 6220 Miller Road, between Michigan and Warren Avenues, Dearborn.
