Detroit Branch NAACP to Announce Keynote Speaker for 48th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner; 'Much anticipated speaker joins a long line of luminaries from dinners past such as Bill Clinton, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Colin Powell, Lee Iacocca and Bill Cosby'.

DETROIT -- DETROIT, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Detroit Branch NAACP will announce the keynote speaker for its 48th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner at a 10:30 a.m. press conference tomorrow, April 15, 2003 at 2990 E. Grand Blvd.

"This year's speaker is one who promises to truly capture the spirit of our dinner's theme - The Souls of Black Folk 100 Years Later," said Reverend Wendell Anthony, NAACP Detroit Branch President. "In a time where the highest court in the land is once again debating the question of civil rights with affirmative action, I believe everyone will find this speaker most appropriate. The irony is that 100 years from the time when W.E.B. DuBois first identified the major issue of the 20th Century, it is poised to be the major problem of the 21st Century as well."

That issue was captured in DuBois' most famous quote: "The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line -- the relations of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia, Africa, in America and the islands of the sea." This year's April 27th dinner speaker joins a long line of luminaries such as DNC Chairman and later U.S. Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown, President Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby, Vice President Al Gore, Lee Iacocca, U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, general and now U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and Mayor Coleman A. Young. Detroit is the only branch where both a sitting president and vice president have given addresses.

Details of the 2nd Annual Freedom Weekend held April 24 - 26th will also be announced including the national town hall meeting, introduction of a new African-American Think Tank, the hip-hop summit, the rhythm and blues concert, the comedy awards night, and the comprehensive workshops on economics, business and health.
