Detectives probe string of sexual assaults.

Byline: Rebecca Nolan The Register-Guard

Lane County sheriff's detectives are investigating three separate sexual assaults that occurred on Sunday.

In two cases, the victims were teenage girls. A suspect has been arrested and charged with one of the crimes.

The first assault occurred in the early morning hours. A woman said she had been sexually assaulted by a Junction City man while visiting his home. She was treated at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene and released.

The sheriff's office identified the suspect as Robert George Vindhurst, 57, a registered sex offender currently on parole for sexual crimes against a child.

He fled the area in a car that was later found in Springfield. Detectives think Vindhurst may be driving a brown van or black 2005 Ford Focus with Oregon license plate BLK177.

The second report came in at about 4:30 p.m., when a 15-year-old girl told the sheriff's office she had been raped by a man as they drove on Highway 126 near Clay Creek. The sheriff's office identified the man as William Clay Danielson, 42, of Brookings.

Danielson and the girl had known each other for several years. Detectives said he returned her to her home after the assault. She was treated at Sacred Heart.

Eugene police later found Danielson walking near Marcum Lane and Nebraska Street in west Eugene. He was being held at the Lane County Jail on two felony counts of first-degree rape.

About three hours later, at 7:30 p.m., the sheriff's office received a report that a 17-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted by a man in the women's rest room at the Creswell City Park. The girl was treated at Sacred Heart.

She described her attacker as a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall and muscular with shoulder length dark hair, a tan complexion and a long nose with a wide base. She said his clothing and hair looked "grungy."

The sheriff's office asked anyone with information about the assaults to contact the agency's tip line at 682-4167.
