Visitors to the U.K. in 2009 will also, for the first time, be able to take a new, direct train route to Lincoln from London. The daily service will operate from the new St. Pancras International station and will therefore also provide direct connections with Eurostar services to Paris and Brussels following the opening of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. York is taking full advantage of the fact that nearby Castle Howard was used as a location recently for the movie [sup.3]Brideshead Revisited.[sup.2] To celebrate this, Castle Howard will be opening once-ruined rooms in the High South used as sets in the film, and now featuring an exhibition on the new film and the 1981 Granada TV series of [sup.3]Brideshead Revisited.[sup.2] Nov 14, 2008

ABode

Hotel operator ABode plans to open in Chester a new hotel in the Spring as part of the HQ development close to the city center. The 80-bedroom boutique-style hotel will feature individually designed accommodation and a restaurant offering views across the oldest racecourse in Britain to the mountains of North Wales. Also in Chester, Hoole Hall Hotel and Spa will open a new 25,000 square foot luxury spa in the Summer of 2009, offering treatments and therapies to rival the best spas worldwide and will be located in a three storey subterranean building. Alongside it will be two swimming pools and a state of the art gymnasium and fitness suite. Nov 14, 2008

Avon

Stratford-upon-Avon's Shakespeare Country will be celebrating the fact that 2009 marks the 400th anniversary since the Shakespeare Sonnets were printed for the first time. As a result, Royal Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Michael Boyd will be directing [sup.3]As You Like It[sup.2] at The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford. [sup.3]The Winter[sup.1]s Tale,[sup.2] a late Shakespeare play about jealousy, loss and redemption, will be directed by David Farr. A production of [sup.3]Julius Caesar[sup.2] will also be showing, as well as a RSC Young People[sup.1]s Shakespeare production of [sup.3]The Comedy of Errors.[sup.2] And Bancroft Gardens is planning a Public Opening and Celebrations event as part of the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations in April. Bath

Bath will launch the inaugural Bath Comedy Festival, which is set to take place between April 1 and 12. The Festival will be complemented by the opening of Komedia, described as a European Cafe Style Live Entertainment Venue. Komedia's new home in Bath is the former Beau Nash Picture House just a few minutes walk from the Abbey. Built in the 1920's the Beau Nash was the first cinema in the West of England and the building's Neo Classical auditorium now provides the setting for Komedia's events and cafe bar. Komedia Bath will feature a mixed program of cabaret, music and comedy and at many performances customers can enjoy a delicious meal while watching a show. Nov 14, 2008

Belgian government announced plans to cancel introduction of an airline passenger tax. Assn. of European Airlines Secretary General Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus said the decision "brings a note of sanity to the ticket tax debate." Nov 11, 2008

Oxford

The Pitt Rivers Museum of Anthropology in Oxford is set to re-open in the spring of 2009. The Victorian cases are crammed with close to 100,000 objects giving visitors the chance to discover artifacts from all over the world, including Native American masks, Inuit suits and many unusual items of English and European folklore (such as a preserved slug on a thorn used to cure warts and a bottle said to contain a witch). Oxford

New hotels, new attractions, major anniversaries and events, and more including the re-opening of an eccentric museum in Oxford, are giving U.S. visitors to Britain even more reason to spend time in Britain's Heritage Cities in 2009. Durham, for example, will see the opening of two new luxury hotels. The Fallen Angel is a Grade II listed Georgian Town House which offers 10 individually themed rooms, including a sci-fi room and a garden room with a grass carpet, while the Radisson SAS Hotel, on a bend of the River Wear, offers views of the Cathedral North of England.
