Despite Controversy, Brooklyn College Discussion on BDS Movement Will Occur.

PNN The debate continues over a panel discussion on the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, which is scheduled for February 7th on the Brooklyn College campus. The college administration has stood by their position to hold the event, which will be a panel discussion with Palestinian rights activist Omar Barghouti and leading scholar Judith Butler. The event is being held to discuss the importance of and reasons behind the international movement to boycott Israel, both economically and academically. Many prominent figures have expressed their outrage over the Brooklyn College political science department co-sponsoring such an event, including Jewish leaders like Alan Dershowitz, as well as governmental figures, including ten city council members from New York, and some members of the US Congress. The Hebrew newspaper "Mriv" from Tel Aviv on Wednesday expressed concern over the fact that this shows that the protest movement against Israel seems to have spread from just groups of students expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people to the university administration as well. The President of Brooklyn College, Karen L. Gould, put out a strong statement saying that the college will go forward with the event planned. She noted that "as an institution of higher education, it is incumbent upon us to uphold the tenets of academic freedom and allow our students and faculty to engage in dialogue and debate on topics they may choose, even those with which members of our campus and broader community may vehemently disagree." She was careful to say, however, that "Brooklyn College does not endorse the views of the speakers visiting our campus next week," and that "we also encourage our students and faculty to explore these issues from multiple viewpoints and in a variety of forums so that no single perspective serves as the sole source of information or basis for consideration."
