A PS55m housing development could see 'build-your-own' homes quite literally dropped into one area of Merseyside.
Landowner Peel L&P has submitted plans for a new type of tailor-made housing that could transform Birkenhead's waterfront into an "international" destination.
The plans, submitted with regeneration company Urban Splash, will see 347 modular, factory-built homes delivered at the Wirral Waters site if approved.
Modular homes are pre-built homes which have taken off in many forms across the UK to address the growing housing crisis, including in Speak.
However Urban Splash is bringing its award-winning modular concept 'House' to Merseyside for the first time - and it comes with a unique catch.
Each of the properties will be customisable by purchasers before being created in the Urban Splash factory and delivered to site.
Customers can choose anything from the number of floors and rooms to the finish of the floors, stairs and kitchen units before the homes are built.
Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Peel L&P, said this would create an 'internationally recognised' waterfront development and address the housing shortage.
The development boss said: "We have entered in to a joint venture with Urban Splash to deliver this project because it is unique in that it will bring the very latest in modular housing design and innovation to Wirral Waters.
"If approved, our Urban Splash development will not only tackle the housing crisis and take the pressure off our greenbelts but it will transform the site into a highly contemporary, internationally recognised waterside residential quarter."
Urban Splash's 'House' scheme has completed and sold out in Manchester.

People can design their homes on the company website, and choose between open plan living and cosy small scale nooks or 'garden living' and loft-style houses. Simon Humphreys of Urban Splash added: "This new residential quarter is an exciting transformation for Merseyside and we're delighted to be contributing to this emerging neighbourhood, bringing a wide choice of modern, innovative new homes for people." " 'House' is the latest plan to be revealed for the Wirral Waters Scheme on former dockland in Birkenhead. Earlier this monthus at planning was approved for a multi-million pound business hub that could help bring 20,000 jobs to Liverpool.
