Design firm pledges gift.

The New York City architectural/engineering firm, Haines Lundberg Waehler (HLW), has pledged a $10,000 gift to the National Academy of Sciences to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the firm's leadership role in the design of research facilities.

HLW currently is designing the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research which will be located in Forest Glen, Maryland. Other projects have included the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The gift has been earmarked for the Academy's Government-University - Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR), which was established in 1984 as a forum in which leaders from government, universities, and industry meet periodically to discuss issues affecting the strength and vitality of the research enterprise. The Roundtable's council is chaired by Richard F. Celeste, former governor of Ohio. Recent GUIRR reports and discussion papers include Fateful Choices: The Future of the U.S. Academic Research Enterprise, Federal-state Cooperation in Science and Technology Programs, and Future National Research Policies within the Industrialized Nations.
