Depressed over 9/11.

An American woman stabbed herself after becoming depressed over the September 11 terrorist attacks, Cardiff Coroners' Court heard today.

New York-born Barbara Edith Lalis, 48, went missing on March 18 last year, leaving a note for her husband, former Vale councillor Mansel Lalis, at their Ogmore-by-Sea home.

Beside it were her engagement, wedding and eternity rings.

Detective Inspector David Runnalls of Barry Police said: 'Mansel felt that was odd as she never took her wedding ring off.'

Mr Lalis, of Craig-yr-Eos Place, went looking for his wife, who had trained as an opera singer, before calling police.

She was found, wearing a rugby shirt, on a coastal path on a cliff between Ogmore-by-Sea and Southerndown. A kitchen knife was discovered nearby.

Det Insp Runnalls said: 'She had been suffering from anxiety with psychotic episodes and was taking medication.

'She had been particularly affected by some of the terrorist incidents that happened in New York on September 11 and in Spain.'

Coroner Dr Lawrence Addicott recorded a verdict of suicide.
