Depleted Muni stun Sherwood; BOWLS.
Byline: Norman Stephens
SOLIHULL Municipal Bowls Club enjoyed another unexpected victory in the last round of Birmingham League games, beating Sherwood Park B at Brick Kiln Lane.
As The Muni were missing their captain and other senior bowlers while Sherwood included some of their A team players, the hosts did not expect to have an easy match. Muni skip Phil Holmes roused the near capacity crowd by calling his rink - with Rob Wilson, Geoff Wyatt and Grahame Spiby - into all-out powerplay, to take a 8-3 lead after six ends. Phil's rink continued to attack and after the middle third led 18-11.
The visitors could find no answer to the Muni's attacking play and the hosts ran out 26-15 winners.
It fell to Muni skip Gary Langford, with Roger Reade, Nigel Walker and Alex Lewis, to limit the damage on their rink to no more than ten shots; this they did perfectly restricting the visitors to a 20-11 win to give the Muni a 4-2 overall victory.
This unexpected success ensured that The Muni retained their sixth place in Birmingham League Division A, increasing their season points tally to 57, seven points more than last year.
The Muni entertained Bournville in a midweek match of four mixed triples, with John Hanmore skipping Brian Nock and Pat Sheridan to victory on Rink 5, and Norman Stephens skipping June Cooper and John Herbert to win on Rink 3. For Bournville, L. Arnold skipped I.Rogers and S.Somerville to win on Rink 4, while skip J. Jones with J.James and C. Quance won on Rink 2, to square the match at two rinks each. Bournville took the match victory on points.
