Summary: Depeche Mode have been forced to cancel more European concerts due to frontman Dave Gahan's illness.

Depeche Mode have been forced to cancel more European concerts due to frontman Dave Gahan's ongoing illness.

Gahan, Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher were due on stage in Athens, Greece, when the 47-year-old lead singer fell ill in his dressing room on Tuesday night and had to be taken to hospital.

Three-times married Gahan, who has previously battled heroin addiction, is said to be suffering from a severe bout of gastroenteritis.

Thursday's show in Istanbul is being scrapped and a statement said more concerts are being called off due to "further complications" and that the singer is undergoing further tests.

The other cancelled concerts are in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia on May 16, 18, 20 and 21 respectively.

Ticket holders for the above shows are advised to hold on for an announcement about rescheduled dates or final cancellation.

Depeche Mode are one of the longest-lived bands to have emerged from the early 1980s, with 45 songs in the British singles chart.

The group has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide and plays post-punk, new wave music. They formed in Basildon, Essex in 1980.
