The Government has conducted a determined campaign to cut down truancy. They've spent millions but still ministers estimate that as many as 50,000 children may bunk off on any one day.

Last week Parliament debated the issue and a junior minister explained to rapt MPs that new and even more effective measures would soon be in place. Very impressive. It would have been even more impressive if almost all our MPs hadn't decided to bunk off themselves that day.

The chamber held just 20 members, nine Tories, nine Labour and two Lib Dems.
