Democrat Mutiny Strands Gephardt, Bonior On the Lost Isle of Washington Spending.

WASHINGTON, July 20 /PRNewswire/ --

Tom DeLay (R-TX), the House Majority Whip, today welcomed rank and file Democrats who abandoned their leadership to embrace Republican priorities by voting to bring needed tax relief to the American people.

Congressman DeLay made the following statement today:

"The ship has sailed and the House Democratic leadership is left on an deserted island.

"Yesterday, 182 Democrats voted for IRA expansion reform and today 51 Democrats voted for the Marriage Penalty reform bill-despite their leadership's lobbying and arm-twisting against these bills. Dick Gephardt, David Bonior, Charlie Rangel, and Patrick Kennedy urged their members to oppose tax relief so they could have more big government programs. But their extreme position is now at odds with their own caucus.

"What does this show? It demonstrates the bipartisan appeal of a common sense, family-friendly tax code. It shows that the Democrats can't resist public pressure for fairer, simpler taxes-they even deserted their leaders in the process.

"The mutiny of the rank-and- file Democrats has stranded Gephardt, Bonior and the rest of the crew on the lost isle of Washington spending."
