Delegation of 96th NMC visits ECP.

ISLAMABAD -- A delegation of 76 senior officers of the 96th National Management Course (NMC) visited the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on their inland study tour.

The delegation was led by Mr. Ismail Qureshi, Rector of the National School of Public Policy (NSPP). The Acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan welcomed the participants and a detailed presentation was given to them on the role and responsibilities of the ECP as well as the new initiatives taken by it in order to improve the Electoral Process in Pakistan.

The CEC informed the participants that the Election Commission of Pakistan is an independent and autonomous constitutional body charged with the function of conducting transparent, free, fair and impartial elections to the National and Provincial Assemblies. The holding of elections to the office of the President and the Senate are, however, the functions of the Chief Election Commissioner.

He said that under the existing laws the conduct of Local Government Elections is also the responsibility of the Chief Election Commissioner.

He highlighted that all executive authorities in the Federation and Provinces, under Article 220 of the Constitution, are bound to assist the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commission in the discharge of his or its functions.

The participants were informed that the Election Commission of Pakistan has embarked upon a process of positive change by working in a systematic manner, and strategically addressing the issues and setting new professional standards.

Moreover, the Election Commission of Pakistan in its Strategic Plan 2010-14 has encompassed all relevant areas by realizing the significance of having a well planned approach in view of the future challenges it may confront, he added.

He said that the issue of preparation of first-ever computerized electoral rolls was also discussed in detail and the participants were informed about the efforts being made by the ECP regarding revision/preparation of the electoral rolls and its final publication within the shortest possible time.

Acting CEC stressed upon the participants to assist and support the ECP is discharge of its duties as sincere support/assistance of district, provincial administration could ensure free and fair and transparent elections definitely.

The participants appreciated all the efforts made by the ECP and the meeting ended with the vote of thanks to and from the CEC.
