Delayed Breast Development Cause for Suspicion

If a girl has no breast development by age thirteen, she needs a medical examination without delay, cautions Paul G. McDonough, a physician at the Medical College of Georgia.

There's only a 4 percent probability that she's normal, Dr. McDonough explains, because physiologic delay of puberty is rare.

To identify ovarian failure, which is the most frequent cause of female sexual infantilism, blood tests are important. The thyroid gland should also be evaluated, McDonough suggests. Pituitary tumors could also be implicated.
