Delaware Valley AQP Hosts Ozone Action Season Inaugural Event.

The Air Quality Partnership (AQP) of the Delaware Valley, a coalition of business, government and environmental groups from Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania working to help improve regional air quality, recently co-hosted an event with the Philadelphia Diesel Difference Initiative to kick off the region's ninth Ozone Action Season.

During the event, AQP, which provides summertime ground-level ozone forecasts and encourages voluntary actions to reduce pollution, announced the expansion of its focus to include year-round forecasting for particle pollution, as well as presented an award to pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca for its "outstanding efforts to educate the public and [its] employees about clean air initiatives."

Also at the event, AQP said John Coscia, executive director of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), which administers AQP, signed the official charter for the Philadelphia Diesel Difference, an effort "dedicated to encouraging owners of diesel-powered vehicles to voluntarily retrofit their fleets with emission controls, use ultra-low sulfur fuel and actively look for other ways to reduce diesel emissions."

AQP noted that the Delaware Valley does not currently meet the federal air quality standards for ground-level ozone and, based on monitoring data, will not meet the standard for particle pollution to be announced later this year.
