Defunct charity's asylum cases transferred to city lawyers.

LIVERPOOL immigration lawyers took over asylum cases after a legal charity went into administration.

Refugee and Migrant Justice (RMJ) was taken over by administrators in June.

Since then, the Legal Services Commission (LSC) has been working to transfer case files to other legal aid providers.

Among them was Church Street-based Jackson & Canter, which received a case bundle last week.

The firm has also employed three former RMJ case workers. The LSC said last night it had completed the transfer of all files that still needed work carrying out, though it is not known exactly how many Jackson & Canter took on.

The firm's managing partner, Andrew Holroyd, has criticised the "unfair" legal aid payments system, which he said contributed to RMJ's downfall. The Government blamed "inefficiencies" for the charity's collapse.

Last night, Jackson & Canter's head of immigration, James McGuinness, told LDP Legal: "The demise of RMJ was unforeseen and tragic. Its clients, many of whom are vulnerable, were suddenly left bereft of legal representation.

"Jackson & Canter, in consultation with the LSC and the administrators of RMJ, agreed to offer a lifeline to former RMJ clients who are living in the North West, ensuring that they do not go without effective legal representation." LSC executive director for commissioning, Hugh Barrett, said: "We have done everything we can to smooth the transition of cases to other providers in as short a time as possible."
