Defense Logistic Agency.
* U.S. Reps. Marion Berry, VicSnyder and Mike Ross, all D-Ark.,
have called on the Defense Logistic Agency to stand by its agreement to
buy Army berets from Bancroft Cap Co. of Cabot. Canceling the contract
for berets -- including 1.3 million black ones for $8 million, to be
supplied in time for the Army's 226th anniversary on June 14--would
amount to "putting [Bancroft] out of business overnight," said
a letter the three congressmen sent to Lt. Gen. Henry T. Glisson, DLA director. The Defense Contract Management Agency is investigating the
use of foreign-produced materials provided by the U.S.-based suppliers
that Bancroft uses in making berets. Bancroft, founded in 1901 in
Worcester, Mass., built its Cabot plant in 1967 and employs more than
100 workers there.
