Defending champ Lark masters field.

REIGNING champion Slip The Lark got his defence of the Red Mills Masters off to a winning start when he won the third heat in the first round at Waterford on Saturday.

Slip The Lark broke fast and led up from Scholes Fantasy and Ballymac Under. The latter challenged strongly down the far side but was forced to change sides on the run-in and Oaks winner Skywalker Queen came with a big late run to finish threeparts-of-a-length second behind the Pat Buckley-trained Slip The Lark in 29.81sec, with Ballymac Under just a head back in third.

Fastest heat winner was Greta Scotland's Carib King in a thrilling opening heat where the Graham Holland-trained tracker, only third down the back, came through to win by a neck from St Louis Spirit in 29.73sec, with Broadacres Turbo a halflength third.

The second heat saw the Peter Cronin-trained Global Hope come from way off the pace to snatch a late, late head victory over Star Of Aaron in 30.25sec, with pace-setting Daring Ace just a neck adrift in third.
