Decide on vote for yourselves.

DURING October residents of Billingham will be consulted on the future of Billingham Parish Council pretentiously calling itself a town council and set up originally to replace the Billingham Urban District Council which did so much to enhance Billingham when it existed.

I suggest that the decision on whether to abolish it or not be delayed to see whether the schemes set afoot to rejuvenate John Whitehead Park are viable. Public money has been invested in an ambitious project which could be of great public benefit.

In these days of severe cuts in public spending the increase in precepts made by the parish council need to be justified but as in private industry sometimes there is a time when investment yields no immediate returns but if persisted can reap real dividends.

The staff do present themselves as highly motivated to serve the local community and the borough council should take this into consideration.

I hope other residents of Billingham will visit the park and make their own inquiries before they respond to the opportunity to cast a vote. I don't criticise the campaign to give us the chance to indicate what we want to happen. We must decide on what is the position today.

GEOFF BULMER, Billingham
