Deauville: Money is no guarantee of success - but it often helps.

THE top lots at the last seven editions of the Deauville August Yearling Sale make interesting reading. For comparision, we've included the top 10 lots-or 11 in one case-in the last three seasons.

Remarkably, five sale-toppers have form in stakes company. None have been superstars, but Melikah proved she was well bought, even at a record Ff10 million, when winning the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes, finishing third in the Oaks and second in the Irish Oaks.

She is from the 1998 sale, at which the top 10 have proved a distinguished bunch. The leader in terms of class is the now-retired 2,000 Guineas hero King's Best, although multiple Pattern winner America may yet boost her record in the US.

The top-10 class of 1999 has made a rapid start. Already, besides Leopard Spot, Honours List has won a Group 3 event in Ireland, Bois de Citron has won her maiden in the style of a very smart filly and Royal Racer has struck in France. She is the second successive top-10 filly for the mare Green Rosy, following Group 2 Prix de Malleret winner America, and she has the chance to make it three this year with a Kendor colt.
