Death of firstborn osprey chick.

THE firstborn chick of a breeding pair of ospreys has died.

The three day old chick of Dyfi Osprey Project pair Monty and Nora is believed to have fallen victim to the unseasonably cold and wet weather on the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust reserve, near Machynlleth.

Project manager, Emyr Evans, said it was the second year running that Monty and Nora had produced three chicks and expectations were running high.

He knew there was something "immediately" wrong last week "Two chicks were extremely weak and barely moving, but there was no sign of the eldest chick. Once we zoomed our nest cameras in a bit however, we saw him laying lifeless deep in the cup of the nest.

"It was so sad to see the chick succumb to the weather last week but that is sometimes nature''s way of ensuring that others survive." The two remaining chicks are now "feeding well".
