Dear Wendy - Readers Problems: Dad's drinking ruining our life.

Q SINCE my mum left home my dad has started drinking really heavily.

I have found him out cold several times recently and I am very worried that it is making him ill and that he could lose his job.

I am 18 and have enough to cope with looking after my younger brother and sister.

Jenny from Stirchley

A I AM sorry to hear you are having such a tough time.

I think you need to talk this through with someone who can offer you expert help and advice. Contact Alateen, part of Al-Anon, which is an organisation which helps the families of problem drinkers.

Alateen helps teenagers like yourself who are affected by a potentially alcoholic relative. Al-Anon Family Groups UK are based at 61 Great Dover Street, London SE1 4YF (telephone: 0171 403 0888).

You should not expect to cope alone with your father's drinking and caring for your brother and sister, so do turn to relatives, friends and your GP for support.
