Dear Rachael: CAN I GET HIV FROM HAVING ORAL SEX?

Byline: Rachael

Q I'M 54 and was divorced eight years ago. I recently met a lovely younger girl - a single mum-and we make love every weekend and we have oral sex as well.

My only concern is that when she gives me oral sex she doesn't like me wearing a condom.

Can you catch AIDS from having oral sex?

Dennis

A YES, it is possible for either partner to become infected with HIV through performing or receiving oral sex.

If the person receiving oral sex has HIV, their blood, semen or vaginal fluid may contain the virus.

Cells lining the mouth of the person performing oral sex may allow HIV to enter their body through the lining of the urethra (the opening at the tip of the penis), the lining of the vagina or directly into the body through small cuts or sores.

If you think there is a chance you may have contracted the virus you must make an appointment with your GP or visit a GUM clinic (Genito Urinary Medicine Clinic).
