Dear Donny; SHOPPING with AMBER GRAAFLAND DIY EXPERT DONNY SHERIDANANSWERS YOUR PROBLEMS.
Q How do I fix a water-stained dining room ceiling with a matt white emulsion finish? Geoff Stokle, via email A Use Zinsser B-I-N or Zinsser Cover Stain. These stain blocks dry in 30 minutes and you can recoat in two hours. It means you can finish the job in half a day.
Q The old quarry tiles in the passage of my 1910 house look tired. How do I revive them? Mrs M Evans, via emal A Try Lithofin KF Tile Restorer. I used it on tiles laid in 1890 in an old back entrance. I washed and dried the tiles first then applied the restorer and repeated this to erase spots of a tar-like substance on them. Lithofin also does KF Tile Polish which really lifts dull tiles.
Q The concrete base of my garage extends 8ft outwards, open to all weathers, and the surface is becoming potholed. How can I fill them, taking into account the doors open outwards, just clearing the surface? D Palethorpe, via email A Mix a strong mortar and fill the holes level after first cleaning all loose concrete out of them. Then coat the base with an anti-slip floor paint to protect it. Your other options are to take 80mm off the base and then relay the top layer or put non-slip porcelain tiles on top.
Q Is it possible to buy spray paint for use on a couple of rust spots in my microwave? Sandy Protree, via email A Yes. I have done it on fridges, freezers and washing machines. Use a wee bit of sandpaper to remove the rust and get the immediate surface smooth. Then just apply the paint. I found that did the job really well. Blackfriar enamel paint is also great for small jobs like that.
