David gets it just right.

THE world, his wife and her pet dog can make a decent stab of sounding like Tommy Cooper - but looking like him as well takes a lot of craft and effort, from make-up artists as well as a good actor.

Fortunately, all were on hand in the revealing - and, at times, disturbing - drama Tommy Cooper: Not Like That, Like This (ITV, Monday).

Shameless star David Threlfall did an excellent job filling the funnyman's big shoes and big personality - while the laughs were accompanied by the darker elements of the comedy magician's complicated (wife and mistress) life.

Fine support was provided by Amanda Redman, who played his wife Gwen, aka Dove, and Helen McCrory as his mistress, Mary Kay.

We we were left in no doubt that Cooper could turn nasty and use his fists if he didn't get his way, but there was some delicious dialogue - even amid the mess of his private life.

"Not in the face!" Cooper pleaded as his wife beat him for his adultery.

She then kneed him in the groin - "OK, the face!"
