OPTOMETRIST DAVID Schwarz has died at the age of 80 following a short illness.
Mr Schwarz's youngest son, Leo Schwarz, who himself is also an optometrist, writes: "David qualified from Cardiff Technical College in 1950 and undertook National Service with the RAMC at Tidworth, examining service personnel in the south west. Upon his return he partnered his father at the family practice in Holywell, North Wales.
"Married with five children, David was a committed participant in local government and became chairman of Clwyd County Council in 1976. He spent 31 years as a magistrate, was chair of governors of three local schools and served for many years on the Education Committee of the Diocese of Wrexham. He was awarded an OBE in 1977 and made a Papal Knight of St Gregory.
"Throughout this time he practised full-time in Holywell and served on the local optical committee. He practised regularly and provided holiday cover well into his 80th year.
"David was a keen follower of the Wales rugby team and rarely missed internationals at Cardiff Arms Park and the Millennium Stadium, as well as travelling aboard to support his national team."
Mr Schwarz is survived by his wife Margot, five children and nine grandchildren.
