A CRUEL carer viciously assaulted her 83-year-old father and stole more than PS17,000 after she moved into his home.

Davina Delo, 47, of Ivanhoe Street, Dudley, promised to care for David Glass and help with his finances when she moved into his Telford home.

But along with her husband David Delo, 43, she started to squander her father's cash, including pension payments, and forced him to live in squalor when she failed to do housework.

The pensioner was even knocked unconscious and suffered head injuries following a family row.

Mrs Delo was sentenced to 32 months in prison for theft and was also handed a 43-month consecutive sentence after admitting actual bodily harm against the same victim.

Her husband, of Brook Street, Dudley, was sentenced to 43 months for the same assault offence.

Stafford Crown Court heard how Davina Delo and her husband moved in with the victim after his wife died. She promised to sort out his finances and pay bills while also doing household chores. However, the property became rundown when his daughter stopped doing jobs and started to take money from the grandfatherof-six's account without his permission. Direct debits were also cancelled, leading to power supplies being disconnected. The theft was uncovered when the victim was admitted to hospital in June last year following the family row in which the OAP lost consciousness, and sustained serious injuries to his head and body. The court was told the pair repeatedly punched and kicked her father during the argument.

Social services moved him to new address when they deemed his home had become uninhabitable.

Det Con Anthony Chester-McCabe, of West Mercia Police, said: "Davina Delo preyed on vulnerable man who cared for her and trusted her.

"Their sentences are welcomed and I would like to personally praise the victim for his courage during this case."

Davina and David Delo were also given restraining orders to prevent them from contacting the victim or visiting specific locations
