Date named for vote on quitting UK; UNION.

SCOTLAND'S independence referendum will take place in 18 months' time, Alex Salmond revealed yesterday.

The First Minister said September 18, 2014, would be a "historic day" and added: "I believe Scotland will vote yes to create a better country than we have now."

But ex-Chancellor Alistair Darling, campaigning to keep Scotland in the UK, said a yes vote would be "buying a one-way ticket to a deeply uncertain destination."

He added: "I'm willing to put forward a powerful case for why Scotland is stronger and better as part of the UK."

The SNP won a majority at the last Holyrood election.
