Daimler AG (NYSE: DAI)(FWB:DAI), a Germany-based automaker, is laying off more than 1,200 workers this week at a pair of North Carolina assembly plants.

The automaker is taking this step in response to falling demand for commercial trucks.

Daimler's North America truck unit is planning to lay off 550 workers at its Cleveland, North Carolina, assembly plant. More than one-third of the workforce at the automaker's Mount Holly plant, about 700 employees in all, will also be laid off. The layoffs will take effect on Friday.
