Daily nasal irrigation for sinusitis. (Product Marketplace).
A University of Wisconsin study (J Fam Pract 2002;51:1049-55) concludes that daily use of an over-the-counter nasal irrigation device offers sinusitis sufferers significantly improved quality of life and fewer sinus symptoms. The study used the SinuCleanse nasal irrigation kit, which is easy to use and thus improves compliance. The SinuCleanse system uses gentle gravity instead of uncomfortable pressure, has no closed spaces to harbor bacteria, and includes a preservative-free, buffered saline solution.Patients who irrigated their sinuses experienced significant improvement compared to those who did not. Many patients had already used all the conventional therapies for sinus disease, without improvement. The study encourages clinicians to consider inexpensive, drug-free sources of sinus relief.
