Dad pops question just after daughter is born; Delivery room proposal after 11-year wait.
A DAD turned the birth of his baby daughter into a labour of love when he finally popped the question to his girlfriend.
Justin McAuley waited 11 years - and 24 hours - before asking Fay Clissitt to marry him.
The 34-year-old went down on one knee in the delivery room yesterday as Fay, 31, cradled baby Aoife.
She burst into tears as Justin presented her with a gold diamond solitaire ring at Liverpool Women's Hospital.
Aoife was born at 3.30am after a dramatic forceps delivery following complications.
Justin said: "It was the most frightening thing ever.
"I had planned to ask the question, but I didn't plan it to be quite so dramatic.
"As corny as it sounds, in those situations you realise how much you mean to each other."
Problems began when doctors realised that baby Aoife was facing the wrong way round.
Justin and Fay were rushed to the operating theatre in case she needed a caesarian.
Justin said: "It was possibly the worst 10 minutes of my life.
"The baby had stopped breathing, and the doctor said they had to get the baby out, otherwise we would have had to have a caesarean.
"But, the doctor was brilliant." Baby Aoife was eventually delivered successfully using forceps.
Justin, a history teacher at St Helen's High School, said: "As soon as they took the baby and assessed her, they were able to say she was absolutely fine.
"A minute or so after birth, I asked Fay the big question.

"I said to her, 'We've got a perfect family now - boy, girl, both of us.
"Do you want to make it even more perfect? "She didn't realise what was going on at first, but when she did she started crying.
"A few of the midwives had tears in their eyes too."
Justin, who has had the ring since last November, decided to pop the question just as his Fay had given up hope of marriage.
He said: "I guess I always knew at some point that I was going to do it, but I just didn't want it to be conventional.
"It was always a running joke among the whole family that I was never going to get round to proposing to Fay.
"I honestly have to say I didn't plan it this way to begin with, but I just thought what better way to do it.

The couple who live in Shevington Lane in Kirkby already have a two-year-old son who is called Kaolan.
Justin said: "I wouldn't go through that again.
It was too much. It was the most frightening thing ever.
He added: "But I think I'm going to get a ribbing from the lads and the pupils at school for this."
