Dad died falling over garden wall.

A FATHER died after falling over his garden wall.

David Cowgill, 68, of Gordon Street, Slaithwaite, collapsed and rolled over his garden wall before falling 8ft to the pavement below.

Huddersfield Coroner's Court heard the retired draftsman had been trying to put his key in the front door following a evening out with his wife on December 6.

In the fall Mr Cowgill, who had drunk about eight pints of mild beer, suffered a fracture to the base of his skull and was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

He was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary in a critical condition.

Mr Cowgill was later judged to be brain dead and died on December 14.

The cause of death was recorded as brain death due to trauma to the skull.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, coroner Roger Whittaker said: "This is simply a tragic accident."
