Dad bods.. or just bad bods?
When will our body image obsession end? This week I was asked to head up North to the BBC to be a guest on Nolan Live where I was discussing the new Dad Bod phenomenon.
Forget washboard abs, Leonardo DiCaprio and Simon Cowell are poster boys for the new craze.
If you don't know what I mean, think Paul Rudd scoffing donuts in This Is 40 - that sort of belly on a bloke.
It has been made famous by US student Mackenzie Pearson who blogged: "The Dad Bod says, 'I go to the gym occasionally, but I also drink heavily on the weekends and enjoy eating eight slices of pizza at a time. He is a nice balance between a beer gut and working out.
It's not an overweight guy, but it isn't one with washboard abs either'."
When I hit the BBC in Belfast it felt like a scene out of the comedy W1A as security was tight and it was a mission to get in.
Escorted to my dressing room (I know, the glamour!), I met my co-contributor, the fab model boss Cathy Martin.
Our excitement escalated when we discovered Peter Stringfellow was in the dressing room next to us and he would also be discussing the not so ab fab viral craze. Once the debate kicked off host Steven Nolan wheeled out two dudes - one was a gym bunny who was only short of kissing his biceps and the other guy, God love him, was a dead cert Dad Bod, "chubby and cuddly" as Pearson describes her ideal man.
It felt like we were sexploiting the poor lads. If you had had two women up there with their boobs out we would have been accused of sexism.
Funnily enough most of the audience favoured the Dad Bod over Robocop with one saying, "I'd take him any day."
When I asked Peter Stringfellow live on TV if he'd have a Mom Bod in one of his strip clubs he promptly replied: "Not a chance."
Pearson is basically saying to men to let yourselves go so us chicks can look good.
I'm not so sure how fellas would feel if the Mom Bod started gaining momentum. When we let ourselves go will they find us sexy? But are we our own worst enemy girls? There's nothing new about Dad Bods. You only have to look at most US sitcoms where there's a token dad with a beer gut who loves scoffing loads of pizza.
But what's new about Dad Bod is the appreciation of letting ourselves go. Surely whether we are male or female Strongbod should be our motto?
Pouts: yours truly with Mr Stringfellow
Hunks: chubby vs muscles
