DaVINCI SIGNS STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT WITH NOVELL DaVinci Product Enhancements Focus On NetWare 4.0 Services, NetWare MHS

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to customer demand for enhanced integration of DaVinci eMAIL and NetWare in enterprise-wide installations, DaVinci Systems Corporation and Novell Inc. (NYSE: NOVL) have entered into a Strategic Development Agreement (SDA) focused on the integration of DaVinci's flagship product, eMAIL, NetWare 4.0 and NetWare MHS. At the core of this agreement is the company's intention to increase the already considerable NetWare integration of eMAIL by taking advantage of NetWare 4.0 Directory Services capabilities and supporting Novell's latest messaging transport standard SMF-71. Other development efforts outlined in the SDA include re-writing of the DaVinci Assistant product as a server-based process in the form of a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). The combination of this enhanced version of DaVinci eMAIL and Novell's latest network and messaging platforms delivers the comprehensive messaging solution enterprise-wide electronic mail systems require. "DaVinci eMAIL integrates nicely with the NetWare environment because it takes advantage of multiple NetWare services. It's natural that we'd work closely with them to ensure the highest possible NetWare 4.0 and NetWare MHS integration," said Willy Tejada, Novell Director of Developer Relations.
As a result of the work stipulated in the SDA, eMAIL installations will be able to take full advantage of NetWare 4.0 Directory Services and NetWare MHS without duplicating administration of user names. Integration with the directory services offered in the NetWare environment will allow administrators to manage wide-area eMAIL installations on a NetWare 4.0 network with much greater ease and more control. Separately, re-writing of the DaVinci Assistant as an NLM will create a server-based "mail-minder" for eMAIL users on NetWare 4.0 and 3.X. The Assistant NLM will provide mail forwarding, answering, reminders and mail-status information from the server. As an NLM, this functionality will be delivered directly by NetWare, so it eliminates the need for an external gateway and a dedicated workstation.
"DaVinci has been one of the leading independent software developers building the NetWare messaging market," said Rick Bohdanowicz, Marketing Director of the Messaging Products Division at Novell. "The integration of DaVinci's eMAIL product with NetWare 4.0 and NetWare MHS clearly helps customers by enhancing their options for integrated messaging solutions."
These eMAIL product enhancements, while tailored for NetWare 4.0, will be compatible with earlier versions of NetWare and represent and addition to DaVinci's product line. According to Bill Nussey, President of DaVinci Systems, "Most of our customers are also NetWare users. They're always interested in better, tighter application integration with NetWare." One such customer is Hal Warren, MIS/User Service for the American Psychological Association. His department supports over 400 users on a three-server NetWare 3.11 network. "I'm glad to see DaVinci and Novell work together on this product integration. For us, eMAIL feels like an extension of the network, operating system. So intelligent use of NetWare Directory Services would be a real benefit," said Warren.
"Our customers have always viewed NetWare as a great messaging platform" adds Nussey. "That's why we've optimized eMAIL for the NetWare environment and why it takes advantage of all applicable network services." Of the network services provided by NetWare, DaVinci eMAIL makes use of the following: Messaging, Authenticity/Security, Communications, Directory Services and File & Print. In addition, DaVinci is examining the emergence of Imaging as a network service. The company is actively investigating this technology. "When our customers start to tell us they need to move images around on their network we want to be sure eMAIL is capable of providing that service. We will be ahead of customer demand on this one," concludes Nussey. NetWare 4.0-specific enhancements to DaVinci eMAIL will be available by early Q3, 1993.
