DYNAMIC HOMES REPORTS FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS

DETROIT LAKES, Minn., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Dynamic Homes, Inc., today reported net income of $32,000 or $.02 per share for the first quarter of 1993 ended March 31, a significant improvement from the net loss of $82,000 or $.04 per share in the year-earlier quarter. Net sales rose 40 percent to $1,740,000, from $1,239,000 in the first quarter of 1992.
Vern Muzik, Dynamic's president, said this was the company's strongest first quarter in many years. The first quarter, he commented, is the seasonally slowest construction period of the year, and the company has historically reported losses during this time. Muzik said the company's profitability in this year's first quarter reflects the growing effectiveness of the operating strategies and programs implemented in recent years.
Sales of single-family construction rose 41 percent in the first quarter to $888,000, which included revenues from several units that were built in the fourth quarter of 1992 but could not be delivered for weather-related reasons. The company's performance also benefited from strong levels of multi-family/commercial construction, which increased 45 percent in the first quarter to $720,000. Commercial projects included a 40-unit Wisconsin motel and an office building.
Reflecting reduced price discounting and increased volume, the company's gross margin improved to 21 percent in the first quarter from 18 percent a year ago. Due to escalating prices for lumber and other wood products, a temporary surcharge on home prices was imposed on March 15. Since wood prices now appear to be stabilizing, this surcharge may be reduced in coming periods.
Muzik said the company's outlook is very promising for the balance of 1993. The order backlog of single-family and multi-family-commercial construction totaled $2,292,000 at March 31, 1993, up 36 percent from $1,681,000 at year-end 1992.
Dynamic Homes, Inc. is a leading regional builder of modular single- family homes as well as multi-family and commercial buildings. The company's products are marketed through a network of more than 60 builder-dealers in Minnesota, Iowa, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
