THE STORY An epic tale of swashbuckling adventure on the high seas, with Russell Crowe in fine form as Captain Lucky Jack Aubrey. He and his crew travel the waters during the Napoleonic War as they battle a better-equipped French ship.

THE EXTRAS Two-disc set features several fascinating featurettes, including director Peter Weir on adapting Patrick O'Brien's books to the screen, six deleted scenes, a multi-angle look at the final battle and a selection of stills galleries.

THE VERDICT Powerful and gripping nautical adventure.

Carmen Jones (U)

THE STORY Stunning 1954 screen adaptation of the opera Carmen, with Otto Preminger's film featuring an all-black cast updated to have Carmen (Dorothy Dandridge) a worker in a wartime parachute factory, fall for handsome GI Joe (Harry Belafonte). Great music and great colour filming.

THE EXTRAS Biographies of Dandridge, Belafonte, Preminger and credits designer Saul Bass, as well as theatrical trailer.

THE VERDICT Little-seen classic Hollywood musical.
