DURACELL TO MARKET MERCURY-FREE ALKALINE BATTERIES
 THAT OFFER SAME PERFORMANCE
/ADVANCE/ BETHEL, Conn., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Duracell U.S.A., the leader in alkaline battery technology, today announced plans to introduce mercury-free alkaline batteries with the same long-lasting performance as its current low-mercury alkaline batteries. The company expects to begin shipping the new batteries to retailers by mid-1992.
"Duracell now offers American consumers an environmentally improved, alkaline battery that continues to offer the high quality, long-lasting performance that consumers expect from Duracell(R) batteries," said Charles Perrin, president and chief operating officer of Duracell North America and International Development Markets.
"We have been working on the elimination of mercury in our alkaline batteries since 1984, and we're pleased to now offer an alkaline battery that exceeds current U.S. environmental legislation and meets our own tough performance and quality standards," added Perrin.
The mercury elimination effort is one part of the company's comprehensive strategy to minimize the impact of its products on the environment. Later this year, Duracell will begin packaging its mercury-free alkaline batteries in materials made from recycled paperboard and plastic.
What's All This Talk About Mercury?
Small amounts of mercury have traditionally been used in household batteries to control the formation of gas, which can affect a battery's quality. To produce a parity-performance alkaline battery without adding mercury, battery manufacturers have had to grapple with reformulating and redesigning these batteries without sacrificing mercury's stabilizing effect.
Duracell's environmentally-improved product will be priced the same as current product. The product improvements will be identified on the package, although the familiar copper and black batteries will not change in appearance.
With the introduction of its no mercury added battery, Duracell adds another item to its list of innovations, including the Copper Top(TM) Tester, time- and cost-saving multipacks and saver packs, and on-cell and on-package freshness date coding.
Duracell U.S.A. is a division of Duracell International Inc. (NYSE: DUR). The company is based in Bethel, Connecticut, U.S.A.
