DUPONT NYLON ANNOUNCES PROPOSALS FOR RESTRUCTURING OF EUROPEAN BUSINESS

GENEVA, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- DuPont Nylon today announced proposals for a major restructuring of its European business as part of an ongoing global effort to improve productivity and competitiveness and financial performance.
This restructuring will result in the elimination of nearly 1,200 jobs in Europe, primarily in the United Kingdom and Germany. Earlier this month DuPont Nylon announced the elimination of 1,600 jobs in the United States as part of its global restructuring effort.
"The marketplace has changed dramatically in a very short period of time, and we need to take strong action to restore financial health and position our business for future growth," said Alan R. Titus, DuPont Nylon, Europe managing director. "The challenge is to change the way operations are structured so that the business meets customer needs with fewer people, improved productivity and less capital investment."
DuPont (NYSE: DD) will close the nylon textile filament plant at Pontypool, U.K., by the end of this year resulting in the loss of about 400 jobs. The Dacron polyester filament operation at Pontypool will be retained and restructured.
Units at the Gloucester and Doncaster, U.K., plants will be impacted, resulting in the loss of 250 and 150 jobs respectively.
Also affected will be operations at Oestringen, Germany, and across all functional support groups in Europe.
The company will deal with job eliminations through voluntary separations and redeployment when possible. However, involuntary separations will probably be necessary at some sites.
The previously announced third quarter after-tax charge of about $375 million or $.56 per share will cover the employee separation costs. The ongoing benefits from this restructuring are in addition to the earlier announced $500 million cost reduction target for DuPont's European operations.
DuPont created a global nylon business in May and is committed to being the world's most competitive producer. DuPont Nylon, which includes the nylon operations acquired from ICI, has revenues of more than $4.6 billion and 21,000 employees worldwide. There are 7,500 employees in Europe.
