DUPONT DISAPPOINTED WITH NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS BOARD'S RULING

WILMINGTON, Del., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- DuPont (NYSE: DD) today said it is disappointed with the National Labor Relations Board's ruling that the company violated labor laws by bypassing the union and dealing directly with employees in forming safety and recreation committees.
The company said it is somewhat encouraged, however, by the board's efforts to offer much-needed guidance on employee involvement and the board's recognition that some of the company's employee involvement initiatives, such as employee safety conferences, were lawful.
The company said it and others in industry will evaluate the board's guidance to assess if it is adequate and allows industry to foster the effective employee involvement that is needed to compete in the global market.
The committees were in no way, by design or operation, intended to be "labor organizations" or in any way vehicles to undermine the bargaining authority of the union, DuPont said. They were simply employee involvement vehicles set up to use the talents and interests of employees in safety and fitness matters, it added.
For more than a year, site management and the union have been successful in developing a cooperative relationship at DuPont's Chambers Works plant in Deepwater, N.J. More employee involvement has resulted because of those efforts, the company said. The safety and fitness committees were disbanded in 1992.
