DUPONT ANNOUNCES 15 UNIVERSITIES TO CONSIDER TESTING FOR CROP DAMAGE IN THE COMPANY'S "BENLATE CHALLENGE"
WILMINGTON, Del., July 4 /PRNewswire/ -- DuPont has announced the names of 15 universities with outstanding agriculture departments that have agreed to consider testing for crop damage in the company's "Benlate Challenge." DuPont will pay for crop damage if renowned independent universities can reproduce at label rates the damage claimed by growers in more than 400 lawsuits. If tests show that Benlate did not cause crop damage, participants must drop their suits. The schools are: Auburn University, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, University of California at Davis, University of California at Riverside, Colorado State University, Cornell University, Louisiana State University, University of Maryland, Michigan State University, Oregon State University, Penn State University, Purdue University, University of Tennessee and the University of Wisconsin. "These schools have the skills, facilities and willingness to ensure that the Benlate Challenge is conducted with the utmost accuracy and quality," said William F. Kirk, DuPont vice president for agricultural products. "This is a truly honest and enlightened way to resolve disputes between manufacturers and their customers." The initial selection of universities was recommended by the American Society of Horticultural Science, based on each school's recognized expertise with a portion of the crop or plant species noted in claims. Kirk added that universities in Delaware, where DuPont is headquartered, were not considered. Neither were universities in Florida, Georgia, Hawaii or Puerto Rico because of the likelihood of significant university involvement in ongoing litigation. To date, no litigant has accepted the "Benlate Challenge." "They said our product caused crop damage. We said it didn't. It's a matter of scientific dispute. We say let science settle it," Kirk said. -0- 7/4/93 /CONTACT: Pat Getter of DuPont, 302-922-6285/
