DUPONT, DOW, NORTHWESTERN IN X-RAY RESEARCH ALLIANCE

ARGONNE, Ill., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The two largest U.S. chemical companies and a leading university have joined in a research collaboration to use a super-brilliant X-ray facility now being constructed at Argonne National Laboratory.
Du Pont (NYSE: DD), The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) and Northwestern University are forming a team of scientists and engineers to operate one sector of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne, which will produce the most powerful and focused X-ray source available when it becomes operational in 1996. Each sector of APS consists of two X-ray beams with unprecedented brilliance. The X-ray beams will be 10,000 times brighter than anything currently available and 10 billion times brighter than routine medical X-rays.
In addition to advancing scientific knowledge, the APS will allow researchers to probe the atomic and molecular structure of materials in ways never before possible. Data important for the production, application and use of advanced materials will result. Scientists and engineers can then design new varieties of materials as diverse as fibers, engineering polymers, agricultural products, catalysts, construction materials, composites, ceramics and even superconductors.
"This collaboration is a good example of appropriate cooperation between government, industry and universities to retain America's technological competitiveness," said Richard K. Quisenberry, vice president of Du Pont's Science and Engineering Laboratory.
Fred P. Corson, vice president and director of R&D at The Dow Chemical Company, added, "Cooperating with these outstanding partners in building and using this advanced analytical capability will undoubtedly lead to new materials and applications with real value in the marketplace."
The APS at Argonne is one of only three such third-generation advanced synchrotron light sources being constructed in the world. The U.S. Department of Energy will spend an estimated $900 million on the facility. The DuPont-Northwestern-Dow Collaborative Access Team (DND-CAT) will involve about 40 principal researchers from the three parties, to be joined by about 60 additional scientists, engineers and post-doctoral fellows as part of this venture. The three partners will have invested an estimated $7 million in total capital and operating costs to build their sector. The sector's operating time will be distributed 40 percent each to Du Pont and Northwestern, and 20 percent to Dow.
Du Pont and Dow are world leaders in process chemistry and engineering, as well as the manufacture of high-performance materials. Northwestern University is a leading educational facility located in Evanston, Ill., in close proximity to Argonne National Laboratory.
