DUMPED HUSBAND CUT OFF RIVAL'S LEG IN CRASH; Car smashed into wife's lover.

A COMPANY boss whose wife was having an affair ploughed his car into his love rival and severed his left leg.

Frank Cruse, 52, then allegedly told victim Andrew Graham: "You have killed me. I hope I have killed you."

Andrew, 46, restarted an old affair with Cruse's 47-year-old wife, Sheila, after an interval of 18 years.

It resumed when the pair met by chance on National Kissing Day - and kissed.

Property manager and father-of-two Cruse never forgave Andrew for having a fling with Sheila in 1981, a jury were told.

A month after the affair restarted, Cruse veered his Ford Mondeo towards Andrew, the court heard.

At the time, Andrew was phoning police on his mobile because he feared Cruse was suicidal over the affair.

Charles Gabb, prosecuting, said: "Some might say this was a crime of passion."

The Cruses' marriage deteriorated after the first affair, leaving Sheila with "no real life at all".

The court heard that last July 1, National Kissing Day, "the flames of attraction were fanned" between Andrew and Sheila.

She moved into his home in Shanklin, on the Isle of Wight. But the lovers then received a call from Cruse, who threatened to commit suicide, and they dashed to his home on the island.

Sheila went into the house while Andrew stood outside and rang police.

Mr Gabb told Southampton Crown Court how Cruse drove into Andrew, adding: "From the moment he sees him, he puts his foot hard on the accelerator. He takes a conscious decision."

After the impact, which severed the limb below the knee, Andrew recalled looking up at Cruse and saying: "You have taken my leg off."

Mr Gabb added: "The defendant looked at him and said, `You have killed me and I have killed you'. It was almost biblical, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Andrew, who now has an artificial leg, said: "I realised I was bleeding to death and put my fingers into my groin to stop the flow."

Cruse admits grevious bodily harm and dangerous driving but denies attempted murder. The trial continues.
