DUKE POWER RINGS IN THE NEW YEAR MORE THAN FOUR MILLION TIMES

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- How would you feel if your phone rang more than 4 million times last year? Probably not as pleased as Duke Power (NYSE: DUK). The company boasts that it successfully handled 4.3 million customer service calls in 1993.
Representatives at Duke Power's Customer Service Center in Charlotte answered an average of 83,000 calls per week. That comes to about 8 calls a minute, every minute of 1993. The average customer call is 2.5 minutes and inquiries range from new service applications, to billing and payment options, to Duke Power's stock price.
"Every one of those 4.3 million calls is important to us and we pride ourselves on prompt, professional, courteous customer service," said Sharon Decker, Duke Power vice president of customer service. "Duke Power is a leader among utilities and other businesses in innovative customer service options and responsiveness to customer needs."
Duke Power offers 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week customer service availability. In addition, the company operates 91 business offices throughout the Piedmont Carolinas.
"Because we respond to such a high volume of calls everyday, we continually look for ways to improve our level of service and response time," said Decker. "Offering 24-hours-a-day-service to reflect the living patterns of our customers is just one of many alternatives we have implemented. Our automated outage reporting and bill inquiry services are also important customer options."
When a power outage occurs, Duke Power customers can dial 1-800-POWERON to quickly and conveniently alert the utility of the problem. Duke also offers its customers an automated service called AUTOBILL (1-800-653-5353) for easy access to their account balance and other account information.
"We encourage customers to take advantage of our automated services and our availability in the evenings and on weekends," said Decker. "Customer satisfaction is our primary goal and we'll do whatever it takes to meet that commitment."
