DUKE POWER RECEIVES MERIT AWARD

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co. (NYSE: DUK) has received the South Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Society Special Merit Award for the Whitewater River Corridor project initiated in 1992.
The award recognizes a collaborative effort between Duke and Crescent Resources, Inc. along with assistance from several resource agencies and environmental groups, to protect and provide public access to this river corridor in Oconee County, S.C.
"We are committed to environmental protection," Jim Hendricks, Duke Power's general manager -- environmental division -- said. "The Whitewater River Corridor contains many unique natural features including rare plant species, old growth timbers and wild rainbow and brown trout populations."
The award has been in existence for the past 20 years. Duke Power and Crescent Resources, Inc. are only the 13th recipient of this special recognition. Crescent Resources, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Duke Power.
According to Dennis Bauknight, Soil and Water Conservation Society's Service Conservationist for Oconee County, the Whitewater Corridor plan is "a major conservation plan for one of the state's outstanding rivers. Duke and Crescent are truly deserving of the award."
