DUKE POWER OFFERS SPECIAL SERVICES FOR SPECIAL CUSTOMERS

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co. (NYSE: DUK) encourages its customers to learn more about the wide range of services it has available for special needs customers.
"Age, language or medical conditions often create opportunities for Duke Power to provide special services to customers who are unable to conduct business with us in the conventional way," said Beryl Jackson, manager of Duke Power's special needs program.
Some of Duke Power's special needs customer services include:
TELECOMMUNICATIONS DEVICES FOR THE DEAF (TDD)
TDDs are computers that allow customers with hearing or speech disabilities to communicate via teletype. Duke Power has dedicated equipment and telephone lines to better communicate with these special customers 24 hours a day. The toll-free TDD number is 1-800-829-0062.
 BRAILLE BILLS
Duke Power bills and other customer information are available in Braille for customers with vision disabilities. To request this free service, simply call your local Duke Power number. Select publications are also offered in extra large print.
 LANGUAGE LINE
Duke Power subscribes to a language interpretation service that enables customer service representatives to communicate with customers in more than 140 languages. The service is available by calling the local Duke Power number or in any Duke business office.
Duke Power also offers home energy management brochures in Spanish.
 THIRD PARTY NOTIFICATION
Sometimes customers may lose their electric service because they cannot leave their homes to pay bills or make credit arrangements.
Third Party Notification service enables a customer to designate a relative, friend, clergyman, or agency to receive a copy of the final disconnection notice. The authorized third party can act on behalf of the customer but is not obligated to pay outstanding charges.
"Today, providing equal access to all customers means more than widening doorways and building access ramps," said Jackson. "It means truly understanding the special needs of our customers and developing innovative services that address each of those needs."
For more information on these or other Duke Power services, call the local Duke Power phone number.
