DUKE POWER HONORED WITH ELECTRICITY-FOR-AGRICULTURE AWARD

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co. (NYSE: DUK) and the North Carolina Alternative Energy Corp. have been honored for a joint research project that could benefit poultry producers in the Carolinas.
The two organizations recently received the Silver Switch Award from the National Food and Energy Council (NFEC) for a joint research and development project of a 24-hour ventilation strategy for poultry production.
Using Duke's time-of-use rates -- charging less for energy during low usage time periods -- the study lowered temperatures in poultry houses by 10 degrees at night. The additional cooling at night enabled birds to withstand the heat stress of the following day.
"Even with some increase in energy costs, net revenues per poultry house increased by about $121," said Duke Power's Dwight Moore, coordinator, agricultural engineering. "Mortality rates during the last two weeks of the flock cycle fell by 37 percent."
Based in Columbia, Mo., the NFEC honors outstanding agriculture programs with the Silver Switch Award, which has been presented annually since 1989. The award provides national recognition to electric utilities that have developed effective electricity-for-agriculture programs.
