 DUKE POWER HONORED FOR SUPPORT OF
 EMPLOYEE/TROOPS DURING DESERT STORM
 CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Power Co. (NYSE: DUK) recently received the Pro Patria (translation: for our country) Award for its support of military reserve personnel who served during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
 The award, presented for "distinguished contributions to the national defense," carries the signature of U.S. Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney and was presented by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
 The company received the honor at ceremonies at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
 "Duke Power proved itself to be a true corporate citizen during Desert Storm," said Ronald Davis, chairman of the North Carolina Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. "The support it showed to its employees and the military was commendable."
 More than 35 Duke Power employees served during the military operation.
 In North Carolina, Duke edged out more than 800 entries for the Pro Patria Award and was the state's only recipient. Nationally, Duke was one of 50 winners of the award.
